Why is the hot dog neglected?

The sultan of sausage is loved by American young and old and yet aside form Nathan's there are no national hot dog chains (and Nathan's is not sea-to-sea).

Yes, and some KFC/A&W Root Beer combos do sell dogs, but it's a sideline.

The thought occurred to me last week when in NYC.

Now locally we do have two hot dog restaurants...White Hut and Nick's Nest. And Chicopee Provisions makes an excellent dog eaten far and wide.

But what is it about the lowly dog that keeps it from climbing the height the hamburger has risen?

Or is it the dog's fate to be the champion of the independent while the burger toils in the corporate vineyard? Is the hot dog the symbol of the entrepreneur?

Your opinions, please?

And White Hut beats Nick's by a mile.

Proudly ©2006 by Gordon Michael Dobbs who will suffer the slings and arrows of criticism all by himself.

Next time you're up my way, we'll have to pop in at Heid's.

Oh, and your way -- is Murphy's (Island Pond Rd.) no longer there, or have they shut down the restaurant? I remember foot longs and grilled buns...

Ah, Marge loves hot dogs -- I don't. But you're on to something, Mike -- why no McD of Dogs?? Weird, indeed. You'd think Sauerkraut King or Dinky Dogs or somesuch would be ruling the roost of fast-food heaven....

Sneaky Pete's in Birminham Alabama. END OF DISCUSSION!

If you'd quit laying around and watching DVDs all day, you could mastermind a marriage of Sneaky Pete's and Teeny Weeny and make us both millionaires.

When I was young and constantly horny I read an article somewhere that said if you prefer hot dogs over burgers you are more sexually aggressive. Somehow that encouraged me and disturbed me all at the same time!

I wonder if it is because hot dog forumlation varies from region to region. I'm from upsate NY (TED's Hot Dogs!) and had never seen fire-cracker-red franks until I moved to NC. (UGH!) There is a franchies down here called "Wiener Works" (Insert Tasteless Joke Here) that is truly terrible.

Interesting ponderable, there GMD!

I don't know from hoffmans. They must be pretty good.

Specifically, Ted's is a Buffalo / Western NY "thang."

Murphy's is still in operation as far as I know.

I remember seeing foot-long franks for the first time as a kid in Alabama and thought they weren't real!

Perhaps this is my calling...a hot dog restaurant that will compete with the burger joints!

Well, if you ever do forsake journalism for food services, here's the name I've come up with for your frankfurter franchise:

"G. MICHAEL DOGGS"

It's my gift to you for all those years of KoKo Komments...
